Short Films - SPIDER

This year, for my A2 coursework, I will be developing a short film in my chosen genre. Before constructing a few ideas, its important to understand what a short film actually is.

What are short films?
Short films are pieces that are usually considered to last no more than 40 minutes, including all credits. They tell a whole story, unlike the movie openings from AS. Short films are often made by independant film makers for non-profit, either with a low budget, no budget at all, and in rare cases big budgets. They are a great opportunity for new actors, directors, story writers and whoever else to gain experience and enhance their portfolio.
Here is one movie opening that we have studied called SPIDER. Directed by Nash Edgerton, it is a very good example of a 9 minute short film. They way the director portrays the character's relationship, even within the first few seconds, is a key feature of short films, and is something which I am keen to introduce into my own piece.
Also notice the foreshadowing when the man opens the door which creates tension and makes the viewer question what is going to happen. The short film is based around a simple idea which turns out to be very effective, and stems out to become a very real and dramatic story.
